sUAS Biennial Recert

Hard to believe, it’s already time for me to do a bieannial FAA sUAS re-certification for my FAA Part 107 remote pilot’s license. What’s this, you may ask?

Seems for a long time, the FAA was dragging its feet on introducing regulations governing commercial use of Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS).

Now, it’s already been in place for about 3 years and properly licensed pilots have started their re-certification processes.

What’s Involved?

At a high level, the average sUAS pilot will need 20-30 hours of ground school. The candidate (or re-newing) pilot will then take the
Aeronautical Knowledge Test for a commercial Remote Pilot Certificate–a 2-hr supervised exam at a FAA certified testing facility

The exam covers a wide range of topics, such as:

  • Weather and Micrometerology
  • FAA Regulations
  • Drone Industry Terms
  • When to Fly
  • When Not to Fly
  • National Airspace System
  • Sectional Charts
  • Drone Flight Operations
  • Liability
  • Airport Operations & Flight Patterns

Every 2 years a sUAS pilot needs to recertify. This is often a requirement by insurance companies to ensure their coverage does not lapse. They’re also key components every purchaser of aerial imagery should ask about.

In the end, when you hire Torben Photography llc to shoot aerial images for you, know that you’re hiring someone who remains current, remains certified, and carries insurance. And, if you ever have questions, I’m happy to try and answer them for you.
